Travel Insurance is a very important insurance, especially, for those, constantly on the move. There are certain things to be kept in mind, when one takes up travel insurance. Long stay travel insurances are more important, as they are spread over a much longer duration that a normal single trip travel insurance. Here are some tips you could use:-
Checking cover and small print:
Some of those, who take up travel insurance policy assume that all those on display, are the same, and it is OK to take any one of them. Now, the disputes start springing up when they realize the matter of fact, that they were not covered in the first place. Hence, to avoid such disputes, use some of these tips.
Having an eye on the excess:
If the excess is quoted at 50 pounds, then the first 50 pounds will be shelled out by you. Comparing premiums won’t help in this process. Medical protection is another vital aspect of getting the best travel insurance. Check on the level of medical protection. New places and pickpockets go hand in hand with each other. See if your plan covers you from such losses. Theft must also be covered in the plan. It should form a part of the loss.
The next tip is to disclose existing medical conditions. The contract of Insurance is one of ‘uberrimae fide’ or ‘utmost good faith’. This makes your duty towards your insurer, equivalent to that of a patient and a doctor. Hiding medical conditions, might lead to invalidating your whole plan, and levying charges of fraud on you.
Keep a copy of the policy documents with you. These policy documents come in handy, in the event of theft, accident and so on. They lay out clear procedures as to how to go about claiming insurance, whom to call first, and so on.
Thefts and Losses need immediate reporting. If something goes missing, lodge a complaint with a local police station, and get a copy of the authorized complaint, to provide as proof to the insurer, that you took immediate action on such an event. Similarly, if the same happens at the airport, get a receipt from the baggage handler or the airline company that your baggage went missing.
Finally, on getting back home, contact your insurer on what can be claimed. Submit all the receipts and clams you have. Feel free to produce evidence and bills to the insurer, as it is such documentation, which will ultimately, enable the company to honor your claim. In case of denial of claim, do ask the insurer for the reasons. Insurance companies, generally turn down claims, which are related to alcohol intoxication. Feel free to reason out your claim, and they might understand your case, and reconsider. Provide additional evidence if required and specific points, if any, against your claim. If you still feel, you have been treated to a poor service; you can forward your case to a Financial Ombudsman Service. This will help you to recover from your losses.
