Which Travel Insurance should you choose?

This question is a rather tricky one. My answer to it is simple. Rather than pondering over the question of which one to choose, it would be a better answer, as to ‘How’ to choose one and how to choose the best travel insurance? Using certain key points, one can device their own choosing plan, rather than getting answers as to which company to choose.

Firstly, list the ‘must be covered’ stuff, in your travel plan. Now, some people need certain cover for particular activities such as skiing and so on. One important cost involved in travel insurance plans, is the cost of medical expenses. It is not always possible to get doctors you trust, or hospitals you believe do a good job. Hence, if you are particular about this fact, then make sure you put repatriation possibility or evacuation to a third country's hospital in your list.

Assessing one’s existing insurance coverage will provide a more realistic picture of the whole thing. Check your current policy agreements and make a note of the items covered and the extent to which such cover is provided. Then, you could move on to other coverage such as credit cards and so on. Make it a point to confirm that all the information you assess is current. Assessing old bills would not provide the current status of the need for insurance. Some policies, in fact, cover many things, that have zero possibility of happening. Hence, check your needs and plans for the proposed travel. As for the assessment, it is an exercise to ascertain the existing privileges you enjoy, so that, you don’t end up double-covering yourself on certain risks!

Call the insurance company by using their telephone access line. Sometimes, these lines do not work abroad; rather, they would work on VOIP such as Skype and so on. Calling the Insurance Company to clarify your position on some emergency clears many doubts. For one, they respond mostly, in a positive tone, which cheers you up. Hence, make it a point to call them on such emergencies.

The Gaps and Holes need cover. Identify these areas and search based on them as well. Also check for the days of cover they provide for domestic and abroad travel. Once all the basic necessities are in the bag, move to the issue of extra-cover on certain other risks. This again, will be subject to your budget.

More importantly, keep calling companies, and visiting their websites for further information on new plans, their existing plans for destinations you plan to visit. Use the internet for getting to the websites of the prospective companies you think, provide a good deal. Finally, identify the top 3 providers from your survey and research and study each of them more closely. You could bank upon user reviews, personal accounts, and other details such as proximity of hospitals which the insurance company covers. These details will narrow you down to the one company you are looking for. Choose their plan and that would have also answered the question, which began this article!
